Maceo Parker

Review 02/01/99 From: Mike Evans

It's Amazing what Rhythm Can Do! Maceo Parker Zephyr Club Salt Lake City, Utah Feb. 1, 1999 The Zephyr Club's on a busy urban corner in downtown Salt Lake City. The club has a bar and balcony surrounding its dead-center square dance floor. The band plays on a medium high stage at the North side. Maceo Parker was there, with his awesomely talented band, and the Zephyr was SOLD OUT. His rollercoaster of Funky music started at 10 O' Clock, then Maceo conducted the wild ride for three more hours. Parker's alto sax and Greg Boyer's trombone made a great one-two sonic combination. Boyer played high as a trumpet, or rumbled low as he wanted. Maceo led almost all of the singing, and reeled off a lot of brilliant solos on his bright horn. The leader of the band was dressed in a dark suit and tie, and started conducting the audience too -- from front and center. "This is the Ooh Yeah Show!" Sang Maceo. "Ooh Yeah!" "Ooh Yeah!" sang everyone else -- more or less on cue. "Ooh Yeah!" This was the song of the evening -- no matter what tune was played, the "Ooh Yeah Show" came 'round again somehow. Its amazing what facinatin' rhythm, and gutty improvisation accomplished that night. There were more than two percentages of jazz in Maceo's Funk, and a lot of sass and spirit too! Bruno (Tatallia) Speight played his guitar cords high on the neck, and shot out flamethrower leads. Rodney "Skeet" Curtis, P-Funk's renowned bass soloist, held a deep groove most of the time, but let loose a few P-flights. Jon Ozment played a phat Hammond B3 Organ, and many fine solos. The most impressive Jamal Thomas played his drums as if he were two or three people at once, with an athletic, precise technique -- like Sugar Ray in his prime. Upstager vocalist "Sweet" Charles Sherell came to the front to sing "Mustang Sally," and drive the women crazy. Corey Parker also moved down from the background mic to rap, MC, and sing. He did very well at the forefront. Greg Boyer stayed down at Maceo's right the whole night -- playing duets, solos, singing, smiling, and dancing. The program DID NOT say: Greg Boyer - Trombone, Vocals, Sex Appeal -- but it should have! "Shake What You Got!" Maceo seemed to like what he saw -- he reached down and escorted one of the lovely women in the audience onto the stage, where she danced sexy, and well, as long as THAT phase of the "Ooh Yeah Show" lasted. It lasted awhile too -- she was good! One of her friends gave an encore in the next phase of "Ooh Yeah," then the stage belonged to Maceo and his musical cohorts until Greg and Maceo paraded up to the balcony, blowing their horns all the way, but the show was NOT over. The encore would have counted as any other band's full set. When they were done, the audience let out an orgasmic scream of appreciation. "Ooh Yeah!" Mike Evans
